What is a Mummy MOT

What is a Mummy MOT

What is a Mummy MOT we hear you ask! It’s the postnatal check every mother deserves, it’s a specialist physiotherapy assessment designed to check how your body is recovering after pregnancy and birth and Be Well is the only Mummy MOT clinic on the Isle of Man.

The postnatal check every mum deserves

After having a baby, so much of the focus shifts to your little one — and rightly so, but what about you?  Your body has gone through pregnancy, birth, recovery… and often you’re expected to just “get on with it.”

A full-body check up

It’s a full-body check-up, focusing on:

  • Your pelvic floor
  • Your abdominal muscles (including tummy gap)
  • Your posture and movement
  • Your breathing and core connection

It’s a 1-hour assessment carried out by a specialist women’s health physiotherapist, followed by a personalised recovery plan tailored to you and your lifestyle. We can also start in pregnancy and do a block plan, so seeing you at 8 weeks, 12 weeks and 20 weeks postpartum.  There’s no right or wrong for when you start or come for a Mummy MOT, this is just a suggestion – we will see you at six years postpartum if that’s where you’re at; there’s never too late to start.

Initial Assessment – During Pregnancy

We can begin during pregnancy to prepare your body for birth and the postnatal journey. You’ll learn how to keep your body strong, protect your pelvic floor, and understand what to expect after birth.

Postnatal Assessment (8 weeks onwards) – 1 Hour

We’ll discuss your symptoms and goals, then complete a full-body evaluation to identify the cause of any pain or dysfunction and treatment begins right away.

Follow-up Sessions (around 12 weeks postpartum) – 1 Hour

We’ll track your progress and adapt your programme to ensure ongoing recovery and strength.

Final Review (around 20 weeks postpartum) – 1 Hour

We’ll reassess, provide treatment, and plan the best way forward for long-term recovery and confidence.

Why is it important?

Pregnancy and birth place a huge amount of strain on the body.  In fact, up to half of women experience weakness in their abdominal and pelvic floor muscles after pregnancy, which can lead to issues like back pain, leaking or reduced core strength.

A Mummy MOT helps to:

  • Identify any weakness or imbalance
  • Prevent long-term issues like prolapse or incontinence
  • Support your recovery safely and effectively
  • Help you return to exercise with confidence

Most importantly, it gives you clarity and reassurance about what’s going on in your body.

What happens during a Mummy MOT?

At Be Well, your Mummy MOT is relaxed, supportive and completely tailored to you.

We’ll look at:

  • Your posture and how your body is moving
  • Your abdominal muscles and any separation
  • Your pelvic floor function (with internal assessment if you’re comfortable)
  • Your breathing and core connection

From there, you’ll receive:

  • A clear explanation of what’s happening in your body
  • A personalised rehab programme
  • Practical advice for day-to-day life (lifting, feeding, returning to exercise)

It’s not just about assessment — it’s about understanding and moving forward with confidence.

When should you have one?

We can start when you’re pregnant, or if you’ve given birth already, at any point! We like to start at pregnancy because this is really where we can start building the pelvic wall muscle and prepare your body for the postnatal journey.

It’s also never too late to start. Whether you’re:

  •  8 weeks postpartum
  • 8 months postpartum
  • Or even years after having your baby

You can still benefit hugely from understanding and supporting your body properly.

Who is it for?

Every mum! Whether you’re experiencing symptoms or not, a Mummy MOT can help you:

  • Feel stronger
  • Move better
  • Understand your body
  • Prevent issues later on

And if you are experiencing symptoms like leaking, heaviness or discomfort — this is your starting point to getting answers.

More than just a check-up

At Be Well, it’s also about creating a space where you feel comfortable, supported and heard, with no judgement, no embarrassment, certainly no TMI(!), only support.
